Surface Appearance
This is a handmade product and due to the characteristics of the materials used, each piece will be unique. The beauty of the product is the variance in surface detail, colour and shade from one piece to the next. Colour and shade variations, speckling, hairline crazing, cracking, air pockets and patina all add to the character and the attraction of concrete. As these variables are uncontrollable, we can make no guarantee that any samples provided will be exactly the same as the finished piece. This is also true if a project requires multiple cast pieces. Due to the natural shrinkage characteristic of concrete all measurements will be subject to a tolerance of +5mm -5mm. These tolerances will be equalised during installation. Fitting gaps of up to 5mm are required for joints and adjoining walls. If Concrete Tuesdays install the product these gaps will be filled with a closely matched mortar, grout or silicone. Sealer marks can be seen on larger pieces, these are lines/dust left over from the sealing process. On pieces larger than 2.4x1.2m shadow lines can be seen from boards being joined for the mould.
Maintenance
We have worked very hard to produce the strongest hardest concrete possible. This also means it is also naturally very dense. We apply either 'Seal Hair' concrete sealer which is food safe or a two part polyurethane sealer which is food safe, stain resistant to most household and culinary items and is heat resistant to 149 Degrees Celsius. Although these sealers are scratch and stain resistant, they are not scratch and stain proof, pieces can scratch and stain, this can result in watermarks, stains and discolouration. We recommend using chopping boards, coasters, place mats and heat mats. No regular waxing or re-sealing is required. When the concrete tops are freshly installed they are still considered 'green' and should be treated with extra care for a few weeks while they cure. You will notice the concrete darken when wet things are placed on it, this is a normal occurrence which should not cause concern. During these first few weeks we recommend you keep the concrete as clean and dry as possible. This certainly does not mean you can't use the product. All you need to do is the wipe the concrete down after use and not leave anything wet in contact with the surface.
Once the sealer has cured the concrete tops will be stain/scratch resistant and no further maintenance will be required. It is still recommended to keep the tops clean, wipe spills as they occur and avoid leaving acidic substances such as vinegar, lemon juice, mustard, onion and onion skins in contact with the concrete. Use a chopping board when needed and avoid placing hot pans directly on the surface. Do not drag items across the surface like pans and sharp objects to avoid the chance of scratching. To clean your new concrete worktops just use a soft cloth with warm soapy water and avoid using any harsh or abrasive cleaners. Please be aware that standing objects permanently in one location may cause the worktops to discolor. We do not recommend standing or sitting on worktops or similar pieces.
Outdoor pieces are susceptible to colour change from water penetration, we do not recommend standing objects in one place on the surface. Despite using a water proof sealer it is not guaranteed to perform in UK weather.
